The area is of international importance to more than 29 endangered species. Often more than 50% of the Spoonbills breeding within Holland are found in the Oostvaardersplassen. An important part of the total North- and West European populations of several bird species spend time within the Oostvaardersplassen. Cormorants have succeeded to thrive here and holds one of the largest colonies in Western Europe.

Birdwatching in the Oostvaarderplassen comes with suprises. For example, a Black Vulture stayed here for a couple of months in 2005.

Besides birds, you have a great chance of seeing foxes, konik, deer and Heck cattle.
